The New Testament was written originally in Greek – the common language of the first century. The Greeks had three words for love – each with a different meaning.
Philia – brotherly love
Eros – the love between a man and a woman
Agape – unconditional love – like the love of a parent to a child
What does it mean to love unconditionally? It means loving someone no matter what. It’s the type of Love God has for humankind.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.~John 3:16-17
The Christians of the first century called the Lord’s Supper (a.k.a. Holy Communion) the Agape Meal. They usually celebrated this on Sunday (the Lord’s Day) in commemoration of Jesus Christ and what He told His believers to do. (Luke 22:19-20)
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.~1 John 4:9-10
God loves YOU so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for YOUR sins so that YOU wouldn’t die and live in hell, but live in paradise, in heaven with Jesus forever.
Jesus tells us this over and over again:
John 8: 32
John 10: 9
John 14: 1-4
John 14: 6-7
John 15: 13
Jesus overcame the world. Jesus overcame death.
All you need to do is ask Jesus into your heart and you too will feel the Agape Love that God freely gives.
To have eternal life with Jesus, just pray this prayer wholeheartedly and sincerely:
Father, I know I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. Thank you for loving me even though I have been unworthy of your love.
I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life from this day forward.
Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
