Jesus predicts signs of the end of the age – A walk through Holy Week part 5

It’s in three of the Gospels:
And I’ve written about it a lot:

So I’ll just summarize this vital part of Jesus’ last days. He knew He was going to die soon – it was essential for Him to get this message across.

First He tells His disciples that the temple they see will soon be in ruins. This came true in 70 AD when the Romans crushed the Jewish rebellion in Jerusalem.

As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” ~Luke 19:41-44

Note the last line – “because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” That is that the people right then and there didn’t get it. Here was the Son of God live in front of them and they didn’t get it.

The curious disciples asked, “When will this happen?” Wouldn’t you want to know?
Jesus doesn’t answer them directly. He tells them what to look for – the signs of the end times. But then He says the most crucial words, “

“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come…” (Mark 13:32-33)
Only God knows when the end will come.
Here are some of the signs:
  • Lots of Christ-wanna-bes will appear
  • Brother will betray brother
  • Children will rebel against parents
  • Christians will be hated and persecuted
  • Nations will rise against nations
  • Earthquakes will increase in intensity and frequency (In the last 30 days as of this original posting there have been 699 earthquakes. http://www.iris.edu/seismon/last30.html. When I looked at this after the first Japan quake, there were over 1200! Over 1200 earthquakes in 1 30-day period!)
Of utmost importance is lessons from the parables in Matthew 25:
Be ready because He could come at any minute – like a thief in the night.
How do get you ready?
  • Open your heart to Jesus, the one and only savior.
  • Pray
  • Serve – feed the hungry, help the poor, be kind to the stranger
They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
“He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ ~Matthew 25:44-45
