First, what does a butterfly have to do with Jezebel? I discovered that there’s a common Jezebel butterfly (pictured above). How it got its name, I don’t know. I searched, but couldn’t find anything. I figured I needed to reveal the truth about Jezebel, since her name came up in the news and social media recently.
Apparently, a Baptist minister called Vice President Kamala Harris a “Jezebel”. Setting aside what the name in its modern connotations may bring to mind, here I’ll show you who was the real Jezebel, what evil things she did and why her spirit is still alive and well in America.
We find Jezebel’s story in 1 and 2 Kings in the Old Testament. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting….
Who was Jezebel?
At this point in the history of the Jews, their land was split into two kingdoms: Judah, in the south, with its capitol in Jerusalem and Israel in the north with its capitol in Samaria. King Asa, David’s great, grandson ruled in Judah.
“Ahab son of Omri began to rule over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of King Asa’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria twenty-two years. But Ahab son of Omri did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, even more than any of the kings before him. And as though it were not enough to follow the sinful example of Jeroboam, he married Jezebel, the daughter of King Ethbaal of the Sidonians, and he began to bow down in worship of Baal. First Ahab built a temple and an altar for Baal in Samaria. Then he set up an Asherah pole. He did more to provoke the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than any of the other kings of Israel before him.”1 Kings 16:29-33 NLT
Baal was one of the idol gods of the Canaanites. The problem was that God — the one true God — specifically told the Israelites not to worship ANY man-made gods or idols of any kind. He warned them over and over again. They were to conquer the Canaanites, and NOT mix with them. But, no, they disobeyed and married Canaanites. Subsequently, they left God and started worshiping — bowing down to — Baal, the Canaanite god. Continuing…
What did Jezebel do that was so Evil?
Jezebel was against everyone and everything having to with God.
Later on, in the third year of the drought, the Lord said to Elijah, “Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain!” So Elijah went to appear before Ahab. Meanwhile, the famine had become very severe in Samaria. So Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Obadiah was a devoted follower of the Lord. Once when Jezebel had tried to kill all the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had hidden 100 of them in two caves. He put fifty prophets in each cave and supplied them with food and water.)1 Kings 18:1-4 NLT
Ahab & Elijah have a showdown… Elijah & God won over the false gods & prophets of Baal. You can read that story yourself in 1 Kings 18.
When Ahab got home, he told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including the way he had killed all the prophets of Baal. So Jezebel sent this message to Elijah: “May the gods strike me and even kill me if by this time tomorrow I have not killed you just as you killed them.”1 Kings 19:1-2 NLT
She had a man killed so her husband could have his vineyard.
Now there was a man named Naboth, from Jezreel, who owned a vineyard in Jezreel beside the palace of King Ahab of Samaria. One day Ahab said to Naboth, “Since your vineyard is so convenient to my palace, I would like to buy it to use as a vegetable garden. I will give you a better vineyard in exchange, or if you prefer, I will pay you for it.” But Naboth replied, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance that was passed down by my ancestors.”
So Ahab went home angry and sullen because of Naboth’s answer. The king went to bed with his face to the wall and refused to eat! “What’s the matter?” his wife Jezebel asked him. “What’s made you so upset that you’re not eating?”
“I asked Naboth to sell me his vineyard or trade it, but he refused!” Ahab told her. “Are you the king of Israel or not?” Jezebel demanded. “Get up and eat something, and don’t worry about it. I’ll get you Naboth’s vineyard!”
So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the elders and other leaders of the town where Naboth lived. In her letters she commanded: “Call the citizens together for a time of fasting, and give Naboth a place of honor. And then seat two scoundrels across from him who will accuse him of cursing God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.” So the elders and other town leaders followed the instructions Jezebel had written in the letters.
They called for a fast and put Naboth at a prominent place before the people. Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him. And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying, “He cursed God and the king.” So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death. The town leaders then sent word to Jezebel, “Naboth has been stoned to death.” When Jezebel heard the news, she said to Ahab, “You know the vineyard Naboth wouldn’t sell you? Well, you can have it now! He’s dead!” So Ahab immediately went down to the vineyard of Naboth to claim it.
(No one else so completely sold himself to what was evil in the Lord’s sight as Ahab did under the influence of his wife Jezebel. His worst outrage was worshiping idols just as the Amorites had done—the people whom the Lord had driven out from the land ahead of the Israelites.)1 Kings 21:1-16, 25-26 NLT
Ahab dies & his son takes reign.
Ahaziah son of Ahab began to rule over Israel in the seventeenth year of King Jehoshaphat’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria two years. But he did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, following the example of his father and mother and the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had led Israel to sin. He served Baal and worshiped him, provoking the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done.1 Kings 22:51-53 NLT
Meanwhile, back over in Judah, several kings in David’s lineage had come and gone. Elijah died and Elisha took over as the prophet of God. He is told to anoint Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat, as king.
So Jehu left the others and went into the house. Then the young prophet (Elisha) poured the oil over Jehu’s head and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I anoint you king over the Lord’s people, Israel. You are to destroy the family of Ahab, your master. In this way, I will avenge the murder of my prophets and all the Lord’s servants who were killed by Jezebel. The entire family of Ahab must be wiped out. I will destroy every one of his male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel. I will destroy the family of Ahab as I destroyed the families of Jeroboam son of Nebat and of Baasha son of Ahijah. Dogs will eat Ahab’s wife Jezebel at the plot of land in Jezreel, and no one will bury her.” Then the young prophet opened the door and ran.
King Joram demanded, “Do you come in peace, Jehu?” Jehu replied, “How can there be peace as long as the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother, Jezebel, are all around us?”
When Jezebel, the queen mother, heard that Jehu had come to Jezreel, she painted her eyelids and fixed her hair and sat at a window. When Jehu entered the gate of the palace, she shouted at him, “Have you come in peace, you murderer? You’re just like Zimri, who murdered his master!” Jehu looked up and saw her at the window and shouted, “Who is on my side?” And two or three eunuchs looked out at him. “Throw her down!” Jehu yelled. So they threw her out the window, and her blood spattered against the wall and on the horses. And Jehu trampled her body under his horses’ hooves. Then Jehu went into the palace and ate and drank. Afterward he said, “Someone go and bury this cursed woman, for she is the daughter of a king.” But when they went out to bury her, they found only her skull, her feet, and her hands. When they returned and told Jehu, he stated, “This fulfills the message from the Lord, which he spoke through his servant Elijah from Tishbe: ‘At the plot of land in Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel’s body. Her remains will be scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be able to recognize her.’”2 Kings 9:6-10, 22, 30-37 NLT
That’s the true story of Jezebel from the Old Testament. I urge you to read it all for yourself. In fact, you should read the whole Old Testament. It is God’s story.
However, that’s not the last time Jezebel’s name is mentioned!
In the Book of Revelation, in Jesus’ letter to the church of Thyatira, He writes…
18 “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Thyatira. This is the message from the Son of God, whose eyes are like flames of fire, whose feet are like polished bronze:
19 “I know all the things you do. I have seen your love, your faith, your service, and your patient endurance. And I can see your constant improvement in all these things.
20 “But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman—that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet—to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she does not want to turn away from her immorality.
22 “Therefore, I will throw her on a bed of suffering, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer greatly unless they repent and turn away from her evil deeds. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am the one who searches out the thoughts and intentions of every person. And I will give to each of you whatever you deserve.
24 “But I also have a message for the rest of you in Thyatira who have not followed this false teaching (‘deeper truths,’ as they call them—depths of Satan, actually). I will ask nothing more of you 25 except that you hold tightly to what you have until I come. 26 To all who are victorious, who obey me to the very end,
To them I will give authority over all the nations.
27 They will rule the nations with an iron rod
and smash them like clay pots.
28 They will have the same authority I received from my Father, and I will also give them the morning star!
29 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.”Revelation 2:18-29 NLT
Got that? Do you have ears to hear? Then listen — pay attention! Jesus, through His Holy Spirit is talking to YOU! Yes, YOU!
So, is the spirit of Jezebel alive and well in America?
I think so. The problem is, it’s not just one person. It’s many people. People with loud voices. Those are the voices you MUST keep from your mind. That’s where the Helmet of Salvation comes in in the Armor of God. Shut out those false preachers and teachers. They may sound nice and fun, but they are leading you far away from God.
You do not want Jesus to say about you — “he or she did what was evil in the Lord’s sight” — like Ahab and Jezebel. They worshiped false gods and idols. They were greedy, prideful, vain, murderers.
The “spirit” of Jezebel is the spirit of the Antichrist, the spirit of evil. No matter how you look at it.
That, my friend, is a no-brainer
If you’re not sure if you’re saved or not, if you truly want to be born again and have the assurance of salvation, receive the Holy Spirit, and get a 1-way, non-stop ticket to Heaven and that you won’t be left behind at the Rapture, this is what you have to do…
